Through the UNC World View Teacher-Student Initiative, I have been able to bring the Galápagos Islands into the study of chemical reactions, specifically bioluminescence. I have also been able to bring South Africa into the study of biomolecules, nutrition, and increasing awareness and innovative problem-solving to address world hunger.  These new approaches have afforded me the ability to not only educate my students about science, but also relate it to what is happening globally. Both my students and myself have grown tremendously from this journey.

First and foremost, any course can benefit from being globalized. Next, globalizing courses also helps students to be less apprehensive about the world around them. From a faculty perspective, I know for me, having served for more than 17 years teaching ancient history in the NCCCS, it breathed new life into my curriculum. I recommend teachers of any subject or grade level look into World View’s programs for resources and ideas around global studies. They are educator focused, interesting and inspiring. I found, in World View, a professional community committed to excellence in public education. The professors at UNC, the expert lecturers, and NC K-12 teachers are great to collaborate with.

World View is everything. I love being exposed to and learning from such a wide variety of speakers, presenters, and disciplines. The old adage, “You don’t know what you don’t know,” hits home when attending a World View program. I’ve been introduced to film sources, listened to diplomats, educators, and more. Every session/program is engaging and makes me excited about what I do as a teacher.

I currently chair our Global Diversity Committee which oversees our Scholar of Global Distinction Program and I also coordinate our partnerships with colleges in Brazil and Denmark. These international partnerships resulted in bringing almost 300 students from Brazil and 175 Danish students to our campus for short terms programs, and a few CCC&TI delegations visits to Brazil. These partnerships bring some much-needed exposure to different cultures and perspectives, as well as dialogue between our students, faculty and staff, and our communities.

As a history teacher, global cultures and current issues have always been important for me to introduce to my students. We live in a very complex, interconnected world, and students must be aware of pressing issues and encouraged to reflect, work together, and think creatively and critically to develop solutions to those problems. It is critical for teachers to prepare students for the future as they become the next generation of leaders and policymakers. Global citizenship encourages students to understand and develop important characteristics of respect, tolerance, and awareness as well as develop a genuine love and concern for the world they live in.

Nadine emphasizes to students how valuable a global mindset can be when entering the workforce. Nadine leads by example in this way. Before arriving at CPCC, Nadine’s career took her across the globe. Working for a company with international locations, Nadine flourished working abroad and living in new and among diverse cultures. Then, at Central Piedmont Community College, Nadine “led study abroad visits to China with a business focus.” She continues to teach students at CPCC how a global mindset—with its emphasis on cultural curiosity, appreciation for differences, and willingness to build bridges—can allow students to succeed in a global workforce and be a tool for building diplomacy and peace.
