Not only has World View enhanced and broadened my understanding on cultural diversity but it has also given me the tools needed to implement and tailor instruction with a global emphasis in mind.

José Martínez is an educator working with the English as a Second Language and the Migrant Education Programs in Vance County Schools. He primarily works with migratory children and youth in schools, as well as migratory out-of-school youth up to age 22. “I wear many hats in the department,” he says, “but my main role is to make sure that every migrant child or youth in my county receives the right education services, including support services, tailored to their needs as well as all the opportunities to meet the academic content challenges and achievement standards that all students are required to meet statewide.”

José has attended many World View seminars and symposia, including The Modern Middle East, Europe at a Crossroads, Building Bridges, Stories of Africa, Building Stronger Bridges and nine of World View’s Latin America and North Carolina seminars (starting way back in 2009!). This year, World View was lucky to have José and his director, Kim Meza, present a session during our Latin America and North Carolina seminar on “Mi Centro – A Summer Program for English Learners Attending Pre-K in the Fall.”

José says he thoroughly enjoys all the programs World View offers “because each program enhances and broadens my understanding on cultural diversity and global competencies.” And not only has World View helped him broaden his understanding, “but it has also given me the tools needed to implement and tailor instruction with a global emphasis in mind.”

Going forward, José plans to work with his director and mentor, Kim Meza, to bring together interdisciplinary faculty to create a Global Team with the goal of starting a movement of globalized curriculum in the Vance classrooms. World View is excited for the work José and other Vance County educators are doing their classrooms, schools and district, and we look forward to hearing from him at many more World View events!
