World View has played an extremely important role and has impacted my campus. I had the chance to collaborate with [schools] in China and establish a partnership.
Dr. Maguy Yancey has been in education for over 20 years. Currently, she is an assistant principal at Carver Elementary in Wayne County.
“I always loved teaching and learning languages. . . . To me, it is important to share the passion that I have for languages with students and adults,” she said. As a former EL, French and Spanish teacher at a high school, Dr. Yancey originally taught language levels 1 and 2; she eventually implemented Honors and AP classes and advocated for her students to be able to take educational trips abroad to increase their cultural competency. Doing this allowed students to “practice their language skills in a complete immersion setting, have an appreciation for other cultures and learn from different points of view than their peers.”
Dr. Yancey practices what she preaches. She taught French and Spanish in Europe prior to her time teaching in the US, and she traveled abroad in June 2018 with World View as part of the China Global Study Visit. She extended her application of the trip by returning to China in November 2018; her goal was to share her experiences with her students and teachers and establish a partnership with the schools that she visited in China. “World View has played an extremely important role and has impacted my campus. Because of this great opportunity, I had the chance to collaborate with principals, assistant principals, teachers, students and parents in China and establish a partnership.”
She also created Chinese lessons in which students were actively involved in learning Mandarin and about Chinese culture. “For the last unit, I used Google Cardboard with the students. They were able to virtually walk on the Great Wall of China and had a great experience! This lesson has proven to be one of the most successful lessons students have experienced.”
Going forward, Dr. Yancey’s plan is to enhance her collaboration with elementary, middle and high schools in China and work on project-based assessments with teachers and students from her district and the schools that she visited. “The pilot was a great success: Students and teachers want more!”
We are looking forward to Dr. Yancey’s continued work and inspired by her commitment to bringing the world to her students.
