The American Foreign Service Association has announced their National High School Essay Contest. High school students are encouraged to write a 1,000- to 1,250-word essay on “Why Diplomacy and Peacebuilding Matter,” identifying two cases (one successful and one unsuccessful) where the U.S. pursued an integrated approach to build peace in a conflict-affected country.

The winner of the contest receives $2,500, a trip to Washington D.C. to meet a member of the State Department’s leadership and a full scholarship for a Semester at Sea educational voyage. The runner-up receives $1,250 and a full scholarship to attend the International Diplomacy Program of the National Student Leadership Conference.
