The 2023-2024 UNC World View Global Fellows are committed to incorporating Indigenous culture, language studies, and history into their classrooms—and encourage other educators to do the same!
Over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year, the Global Fellows participated in this interdisciplinary professional development learning experience focused on the theme We’re Still Here: Exploring Indigenous Cultures. The program expanded and deepened their knowledge of Indigenous peoples in North Carolina and across the globe. As part of the program, Global Fellows attended webinars with UNC experts; participated in the 2023 K-12 Global Education Symposium, Global Indigeneity: Indigenous Cultures, Peoples, and Places; conducted independent research; and received one-on-one coaching in order to craft lesson plans that are current, relevant, and filled with meaningful global content about community, culture, and the importance of place in society. 2023-2024 Global Fellows also attended an in-person workshop in Chapel Hill with former UNC World View Global Fellows and curriculum design experts in order to refine their lessons before publishing them to the UNC World View website.
The interdisciplinary curriculum created by the Fellows includes lessons on:
- STEM topics like Indigenous Food Systems as Models for Conservation & Restoration, Origin Stories of Land Use, and Sea Ice Impacts on a Subsistence Lifestyle
- the arts and history like Decoding History Through Indigenous Art, Symbolism & Finding Identity through Beadwork, Researching Methods: Indigenous Genocide using the “Ten Stages of Genocide,” and Comparing “Modern” and “Traditional” Economic Models
- language, literature, and culture like Hand Talk – Native American Sign Language, NC Lumbee Tribe Homecoming: A Comparison of Celebrations and Culture, and The Impact of Indigenous Novels
- and more!
