We are thrilled to introduce the new UNC World View Teacher-Student Initiative! This year, 31 exceptional educators from across 14 North Carolina counties and nine different content areas have been selected to participate in this unique program designed to empower both teachers and students through global learning. To learn more about each educator please see short biographies available here.

The Teacher-Student Initiative brings together high school teachers with UNC faculty members and strategic partners to enhance their understanding of global themes and apply that learning directly to their classrooms. These teachers, representing subjects ranging from STEM to fine arts, will collaborate to develop innovative lesson plans that foster global competencies among their students.

This year’s theme is Economic Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Problem-Solvers. As part of this theme, participating teachers and students will have the opportunity to explore economic sustainability, focusing on topics such as sustainable agriculture, energy innovation, and smart finance for sustainable development. This theme allows students the chance to study real-world issues in Kenya, brainstorm solutions, and make meaningful connections between global challenges and their classroom learning.

One of the highlights of the program will be UNC World View Students Day, where students will meet virtually with Dr. Arv Malhotra, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School professor. During this interactive session, students will engage in discussions on global challenges in Kenya and explore deeper connections between their studies and pressing global issues. This opportunity will allow students to work collaboratively to address complex problems while learning from experts in the field.

We are excited to watch these educators, and their students dive into this year’s program, exploring economic sustainability and gaining the skills necessary to become tomorrow’s problem-solvers and global leaders. Congratulations to the 2024-2025 cohort of the Teacher-Student Initiative! We can’t wait to see their incredible impact in classrooms and communities.

Stay tuned for updates on their progress and the exciting work they will be doing throughout the year!
