We all know teachers who make a difference around the world. They stop and ask how are you and really mean it. They are the teachers that stay late in their classrooms because they know a lingering student needs to talk. They are the teachers who call the parent and begin the conversation with “everything is fine, it was just a bad grade, not the end of the world”. They are the teachers that buy extra school supplies to have in their classrooms “just because”, and who wait patiently for the student to answer the question, make the connection, be ready to learn. They are the teachers who love to teach and also love to learn. They are the teachers that live to transform others with their expert content and expert kindness.
UNC World View salutes teachers around the world in 2020-2021 during these pandemic times and beyond. We honor teachers transforming the world, one student at a time.
As a tribute to teachers worldwide let’s celebrate with the following poem by Liberian-American poet, Trapeta B. Mayson, a poetry video project in response to the pandemic, commissioned by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage in 2020.
