The Global is Local program at Davidson-Davie Community College is a collaboration among Davidson-Davie Community College, the Davidson-Davie Apprenticeship Consortium, and UNC World View. The goal of this program is to offer community college educators the opportunity to engage with global and local industry representatives, Scholar of Global Distinction students, and UNC Chapel Hill faculty to gain insights into the skills required for the global workforce. Participants will acquire global knowledge and resources to enhance their classroom instruction and will learn about specific career opportunities from the Foreign Service.

This Global is Local Program is open to Davidson-Davie Community College educators. A limited number of spots are available for educators from other community colleges. Register below and email worldview@unc.edu for more information.

 


Learning Outcomes

Workforce Preparation: Participants will gain an understanding of the skills and competencies required by local industries for the global workforce. 

Resource Integration: Educators will receive global knowledge and resources for their curriculum, enhancing students’ educational experiences and readiness for a globally interconnected world. 

Collaborative Engagement: Participants will develop the ability to engage and collaborate with industry representatives, students, and academic professionals, fostering a network that supports continuous improvement in teaching and learning for global workforce readiness

Speakers

Hazael Andrew, Associate Director, UNC World ViewHazael Andrew is the Associate Director of UNC World View. As part of his role, Hazael plans and administers professional development programs for K-12 and community college educators. He collaborates with 31 community colleges in North Carolina and Florida on the Scholar of Global Distinction program, a program where community colleges and their faculty commit to develop and offer globally intensive courses and activities through which students can earn a global distinction credential from UNC World View. Prior to joining UNC World View, Hazael directed the student affairs experience of 4,200 first-year residential students at UNC-Chapel Hill. Beyond domestic educational engagement, Hazael has extended his strategic global engagement, where he worked in China, piloting a large-scale summer academic enrichment program for Chinese, Indian and American students at Duke Kunshan University. Similarly, Hazael created an inaugural program for UNC Chapel Hill that cultivated a new collaborative relationship with the University of the West Indies, exposing students in the United States to the British education system, and fostering increased cultural awareness through travel and engagement in Trinidad and Tobago. Hazael’ s educational background includes a Ph.D. in Educational Studies with a concentration in Cultural Foundations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an MBA in Finance from Mississippi State University, and a dual bachelor’s degree in Managerial Economics and Finance from Fayetteville State University.

Stephanie Bethel, Senior International Trade Specialist at U.S. Commercial Service

Stephanie Bethel is a Senior International Trade Specialist at the U.S. Commercial Service’s office in Central North Carolina. Part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Commercial Service is dedicated to helping U.S. companies to export via its network of trade professionals in over 100 domestic offices and in over 80 markets worldwide. Ms. Bethel has worked with the U.S. Commercial Service for over 20 years, advising companies in both Florida and North Carolina on their export strategies and helping them to enter new markets. She is currently responsible for assisting North Carolina educational institutions and companies in the aerospace, defense, and safety/security industries to increase their exports. In her work with education institutions, she works with colleges and universities, secondary schools, English language programs, etc. to form partnerships for international student recruitment. Ms. Bethel has advised hundreds of North Carolina businesses on international sales, organized multiple trade education seminars, and led trade missions to Costa Rica, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brazil. Ms. Bethel earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of International Business Development from Nova Southeastern University. She currently resides in Greensboro, NC.

Sharon Cannon teaches written and oral communication courses to undergraduate business, full-time MBA and PhD students. She received the 2020 Weatherspoon Award for Excellence in MBA Teaching. Dr. Cannon includes intercultural communication simulations and activities in many of her courses to build awareness of how cultural differences affect communication in a business setting. She is certified to use and debrief individuals and teams with the GlobeSmart Profile (Aperian Global), Cultural Orientations Indicator (TMC) and Intercultural Edge. Dr. Cannon has facilitated presentation training for the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health program, the Royster Fellows, National Science Foundation Fellows, UNC medical interns and many others. She has provided public speaking training for a number of organizations and coached students in the Evening MBA and Weekend Executive MBA programs. She received her PhD from North Carolina State University, MEd from the University of Florida and an AB from in English and psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.

Headshot of Stephanie Hutchinson, Diplomat in Residence, Mid-AtlanticStephanie Hutchison is the Diplomat in Residence for the Mid-Atlantic Region, covering North Carolina and Virginia. Prior to assuming this role, she served as the Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana, advancing bilateral trade and investment ties and working to improve the business climate for U.S. companies. Stephanie has also worked in the Economic Sections of the U.S. Embassies in Lisbon, Portugal and Rabat, Morocco. Her focus in these countries was largely on energy, climate, and ICT issues. During a two-year tour at the State Department in Washington, D.C, she covered U.S.-Turkish economic relations in the Office of Southern European Affairs. Outside the economic sphere, Stephanie has served as a Consular Officer in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and as a Political Officer in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 2006, Stephanie worked for an IT market research firm and an environmental consulting company.  She holds a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College.  She speaks French, some Portuguese, and a few words of Swahili.

Charlé LaMonica, Director, UNC World View

Charlé LaMonica is the director of UNC World View at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Committed to developing an inclusive program that serves the state and beyond, Charlé collaborates with more than 85 partners both on and off campus; forges strategic alliances and collaborations with schools, districts and community colleges; leads the World View Global Education Leaders Program; and represents UNC World View in North Carolina and on the national and global stage. Since 2013, LaMonica has significantly expanded UNC World View’s support of educators, influencing 100,000 students in North Carolina in 2019-2020 alone, and increasing partnerships in both rural and urban settings. LaMonica and the World View team have led more than 21 global study visits, taking K-12 and community college educators around the world to learn about educational systems, history, business, and culture. LaMonica’s international career began as a research associate with the NC China Council of the Asia Society. She later led medical and legal delegations throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa. She continued her international work in the classrooms of Charlotte where she taught world history both in K-12 schools and higher education institutions. LaMonica attended Middlebury College’s Intensive Chinese Summer School and holds a master’s degree in history from UNC Charlotte and a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston College.

Jenny Varner, President, Davidson-Davie Community College

Jenny Varner was named the fifth president of Davidson-Davie Community College on November 17, 2023. Varner has been at the college since 2008 and was previously vice president for external affairs and executive director of the college’s foundation. In these roles, she led the Davidson-Davie Foundation through its years of greatest growth, celebrated the college’s history and milestones including the 50th Anniversary year in 2013, and oversaw the renaming of the college from Davidson County Community College to Davidson-Davie in 2021. She served under two presidents, Hartness since 2019 and Dr. Mary E. Rittling from 2008-2018, and was engaged in all aspects of campus decision-making as a member of the senior leadership team. She graduated from Duke University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public policy. Prior to coming to Davidson-Davie, she worked for U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole and for NASPA, the student affairs professional organization. As a college senior, she co-founded and later ran a nonprofit focused on student leadership. Varner is a Davidson County native and actively engaged in the local community, serving on the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce Board for six years and the Family Services of Davidson County Board for eight years, as well as various other leadership and fundraising roles.

Sarah Wright is a lifelong-learner and enjoys sharing that quest with others. She holds undergraduate degrees in Political Science and History from East Carolina University, a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles, a Masters of Science in Political Science and a certificate in National Security and Intelligence from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University. Currently, Sarah is the Director of International Education at Davidson-Davie Community College, a title she has held since September of 2023. Prior to Davidson-Davie, she spent fifteen years at another community college where she led International Education and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, taught English, Political Science, and Humanities, and served as the lead instructor of Languages and Humanities. A major career focus for Sarah is equity in access and completion of college as well as supporting students in a culturally relevant way. Additionally, Sarah serves on the Senior International Officer Council of Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) and on the Equity Steering Committee at Davidson-Davie Community College.
