The Sonja Haynes Stone Center will host Cape Verdean filmmaker and Stone Center Visiting Artist Guenny Pires for a virtual screening and Q&A session for the North Carolina premiere of his award-winning film CONTRACT. The virtual screening will take place at 12 PM via Vimeo with a follow-up Zoom question and answer at 2 PM with the director. When you register, you will receive a link to view the film on Vimeo. CONTRACT is a film about the centuries-old system of contract slave labor that exported thousands of Cape Verdeans to the island of Sao Tome to work on plantations.

Guenny Pires is a filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual media arts teacher. He is the first native-born Cape Verdean to write, direct, and produce documentary and narrative films about Cape Verde, a small African nation of twelve islands off the coast of Senegal. In 2005, he moved to Los Angeles and founded Txan Film Productions & Visual Arts, a four-member production company.
