UNC WORLD VIEW FELLOWS PROGRAM 2022-2023

The Sustainable Development Goals
for a Better World

The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.”
United Nations

In 2015, 193 countries adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework of objectives for achieving sustainable development, including economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability. By 2030 world leaders aim to reduce inequality and improve the overall health and well-being of the world’s population. The 17 SDGs are interdependent and universal. Each goal depends on the success of another and successes and failures in one country impact other countries across the globe. World leaders proposed this call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, combat inequalities, and to promote peace and for prosperity for all.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework, not only as a course of action to better the world, but for educators to introduce and integrate global themes in classrooms by learning about global issues and their solutions that impact communities across the globe. The 2022-2023 UNC World View Fellows will be introduced to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and learn more about the current status of these goals and why these goals are important to North Carolina. Educators will develop a deeper understanding of the SDGs and the goals’ interdependence, and the need for integrated solutions. Fellows will be supported to develop curriculum that further integrate global issues into the classroom.

The 2022-2023 UNC World View Fellows Program: The Sustainable Development Goals for a Better World is a seven-month long, comprehensive program for up to 15 North Carolina K-12 and early/middle college educators. This year’s program will be a hybrid program, and Fellows will be expected to attend in person, as well as virtual programming, curriculum support sessions and engage in peer discussions. Fellows will also complete a series of tasks, readings, and independent research that guides individuals through a deeper learning of the SDGs. Each Fellow will develop two comprehensive lesson plans that engage K-12 and early/middle college students in learning about the Sustainable Development Goals. Lesson plans will be published on the UNC World View website, open and accessible to all with Internet access. North Carolina K-12 and early/middle college educators teaching in any discipline are invited to apply.

The 2022-23 Fellows Program is funded by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the UNC Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs and the UNC Office of the Provost.
